Google page rank, keywords and an understanding of how google actually looks at your website are important for any online business owner.  I put together my first “chalk talk” video on how google works to show you the two main things Google considers when determining the relevance and authority of your website.  Having a high authority website that is relevant to your market will bring you lots of free search engine traffic in the long run.

Watched your video. Thanks for the great information. I’m looking for ways to market my website. I really like the back link idea.

Shawn – I’ve come to believe that building lots of great content is the best strategy for marketing your web site, but building backlinks is a close second – especially when you are just starting your site.

Hi Brad! I got to you via 48 Days. I really like this theme! I’ve thought about changing to thesis, but I’ve got a few issues with the seo being hard-wired into the theme. I guess I could by-pass that. As to the video, nice feature! You’re right about content being numero uno, and backlinks a close second.

Lee,
Glad to see you here! Yes – second to publishing great content (which is a must), it is critical to develop a strategy to build good backlinks. The fact is that you can’t really generate much search traffic until you have a sufficient number of backlinks coming into your site to built its overall authority.

I’ve moved two of my blogs over to thesis so far, and I’m very happy with both installs to date. I think it is really more of a framework than a theme, and it provides some great options for me to grow and customize the sites.

Your article was helpful. I have been trying for a couple of years now to have a website built. I have acually paid out a few thousand dollars in an attempt to have one built and it has gone bad for me. So this time I am trying to learn more about how it all works in an attempt to find a reputable company that will do what they say they are going to.

Hi – I recommend you take a close look at getting your own web hosting service (which gives you control). Next, install wordpress to your web host, pick a good wordpress theme for your site (I use thesis), and then you build your site (yourself). Using wordpress, its not much more difficult than using a word processor, and you know your business and message much better than anyone you are going to hire. However, building the site is only a start – it takes both time and effort to build good content, do some SEO and start building backlinks to attract traffic. I have a lot of the major tools and web host I use listed in the “Tools of the trade” above – a great place to start.
